Mississippi Adventure

In 1803 Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's Corps of Discovery to find a water route to the Pacific and explore the uncharted West. He believed woolly mammoths, erupting volcanoes, and a mountain of pure salt awaited them. In September of 2003, an adventurous couple from Wisconsin will embark on the final leg of their real-life journey of a lifetime.

With stunning cinematography and meticulous attention to detail, Mississippi Adventure is the real life story of two Wisconsin natives, Walter and Carol Kahlhamer. Their epic journey began in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin with Walter's dream of someday building his own boat and then piloting it down the Mississippi River, along the same route used by early American explorers. The PBS miniseries covers the handmade construction of his sturdy 26 ft wooden boat, and his upcoming expedition this fall from St Paul, Minnesota, down the Western Hemisphere's second largest river, and ends 1600 miles later at the Gulf of Mexico. Filmed over a two-year period, this heartwarming story of hope chronicles an American couple's adventure that started with their inspiring dream, documents the hard work and faith that culminated in the fulfillment of this romantic journey.

The intrepid couple will be stopping to visit dozens of historic sites along the way, including the launch site of Lewis and Clark's epic journey westward 200 years ago to discover a water route to the Pacific. What this couple will experience along the way may be no less daunting, or mind-boggling than what early explorers found on their voyage of discovery.

Along their journey, Walter will spend most of his time at the helm of the boat, charting the course with a notebook computer, the latest in 21st century GPS navigation technology, and digital marine charts from Maptech, while Carol fills the roles of both first mate and the wooden craft's only other crew member.

Although the members of this expedition will not need to be on the lookout for hostile natives along the way, they will still need to be on the lookout for present-day dangers and obstacles. By the end of their eight-week journey, they will have traveled more than 1600 miles down the great Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee River basins.

Beginning in mid-September, 2003, online viewers will be able to interact with the crew by going to www.boldventure.com. Live video feeds, and wireless email to the boat will enable viewers to actively participate in the journey, win prizes from our sponsors, and order the video in time for Christmas.
