Saturday, September 21, 2003 - Launch Day
After nearly three years of hard work and planning, and a final week of last minute preparations, this morning Walt and Carol set off on their great Mississippi River adventure. The air was crisp and clear, and the river was calm this morning in La Crosse as we all waved goodbye to this hardy couple from the shoreline at the La Crosse yacht club.
Last night the folks at the local yacht club where we berthed the Abby Normal this week decided to have a bonfire and an impromptu sendoff party for us. A wonderful evening, good food, drinks, and a few sea travel stories were shared by all attending. We are looking forward now to a weekend of nice weather and hope to make 50 miles before some rainy weather is forecast to arrive on Monday.
Mississippi Adventure is the real life story of two Wisconsin natives, Captain Walt and his wife Carol. Their epic journey began with Captain Walt's dream of someday building his own boat and then piloting it down the Mississippi River, along the same route used by early American explorers.
